Holy Ramblings

May 31, 2010

I don’t have a whole lot to talk about, and I’m running out of things to screenshot. But, here is an update on what’s been going on.

Kerick is up to level 76 (more than halfway to 77 actually) and has been to UK, Nexus, AZN, Old Kingdom, Drak’Tharon, and Gundrak. Now, they weren’t all completely random. You’ve read about the UK trips in my previous posts. There was one more after that … they were on the second boss when I joined the party. We could absolutely not kill them. The dps was horrible, and the tank and I couldn’t handle them on our own. So that one broke up and I queued up again as dps only. I got Nexus. Hooray, I can do the quests without worrying about healing.

Go through the ice room and the Grand Magus no problem, then the tank has to go afk for a crying baby or something. Fifteen minutes later, the vote to kick passes and we get a new tank.  This one embodied all the bad stereotypes of DK tanks. On the second platform with the chaotic rift and the dragonkin, he completely ignored the rift and … well, I don’t know, somehow he managed to lose control of a dragonkin, who promptly took out the lock and hunter and then while the priest was trying to stay away from it, the other one killed the tank. I managed to kill them with some  great heals from the priest, and then we started rezzing. DK gets rezzed and … jumps off the side of the platform to his death. He can’t be rezzed from there so he has to run back in … and instead of running the way that we had cleared, he runs THROUGH mobs and dies again. He tries to get us to get close enough to rez him and somehow we finally convince him that he has to run back again. He runs through them again … somehow this time he makes it past them and resets them. We kill Anomalous .. and then he announces that he has to leave after the next pull. We have some choice words for him after that, then he runs into the tree area, pulls a bunch of mobs, runs to us, and drops group, wiping us. So that was the end of that group. Too bad, too, the other dps and the healer were all from the same guild and were quite nice. I got Grom to tank it for me later that day, so I still got it done … and healing it wasn’t too bad since I didn’t have to worry about actually healing the tank. *sigh*

AZN I already wrote about. Old Kingdom went quite well, although we skipped Jedoga so I didn’t get the achievement for it. boo. Drak’Tharon I had Kaif tanking for me, and Gundrak I had Jerico along to tricks the crappy protadin so all I had to heal was the tank since he couldn’t lose aggro. So all in all, it’s going well. I got drug along to regular ToC at 75 (as ret) … lol … so I already have a Black Heart in the bank and no prot spec. >.<

Phone post!

May 27, 2010

What happens when the servers are located in an attic with a boarded up window where the a/c is supposed to be and it’s 90F out? Yeah, melted router equals no internet. So… get a post typed on my Droid.

Karius finally got to down rotface last night. It took a few tries….the raid lead actually called the raid before the final try, but we knew we were close, so the 22 of us were eating fish in front of his room and told the rl to get up here, we are going one more time. LOL. And yes, we only had 23 people so we didn’t get fester. Wtb raiders who actually want to show up and raid.

Afterwards I hopped on kerick, trained, then queued up. I got azn. Now, azn sucks on a priest. On the pally? You know what, I’m not even sure how much health the bear had. We just went in, killed stuff, and collected our badges. I even healed the rogue. So easy. I’m still dreading my first time in nexus though. Maybe tonight…..

The Holy Experiment: UK 2 and 3

May 25, 2010

Saturday night I was finishing up the quests in Coldarra in anticipation of eventually running Nexus. I’m standing in the inn at Valiance Keep talking on the phone, when my buddy Beldren materializes in front of me. Like, whoa dude! Let’s run a dungeon.

We queue up and get UK with me healing and a druid tank. The tank had some problems holding aggro, and I don’t know enough about druid tanking to know why, but we wiped on the pull before Keleseth. I was doing much better on the healing than I had the first time I was in there, but when all four mobs are beating on four different people … yeah.

Bell goes to bed, the tank drops, we pick up a new healer and a new dps. Waitwut? A new healer? *sigh* Failtank … go! We got through the first boss and the next full hallway of trash before I remembered to put up Righteous Fury. Somewhere before the next boss, the healer left the group for no apparent reason. One of the dps says they can tank, so we requeue looking for a dps and I go back to healing. I don’t remember much about the rest of the run other than, we got through it and I did much better than I had the time before.

Last night, of course, was Classic Raid Night. I decided before the raid that I was tired of my prot spec and wanted to level faster, so I wiped it in favour of copying Grom’s ret spec. So of course, epic tank stuff dropped. Doh! I did get a super awesome perfect-for-a-holy-pally trinket though, Pendant of the Violet Eye.  Although stuff dies so fast to level 80s that the fights are mostly a joke, two people did manage to blow themselves up by moving during flame wreath. hehe!! Gotta love good old Aran. Oh, and I got the legendary Gorehowl for my shiny new ret spec.

So, after I finished gemming my new pants … oh snap! I forgot to tell you about the pants. Yeah, they’re cloth but they have three gorgeous yellow gem slots. So Kaly cut 3 brilliant sun crystals and 2 of them came out perfect! Yummy intellect. I have almost 13k mana unbuffed … I mean almost as in 12,957 or something, it’s that close.

So once the pants are done, I’m still hanging out in the Crits vent and Quest asks if I want to go do a dungeon. He hops on his level 70 frost DK and we queue up. UK again. Level 73 warrior tank, an unholy DK, and a huntard. Ok, this will be a true test of whether I have gotten the hang of this or not. Gear is no longer a question, I now have Divine Plea plus this Mp5 trinket to push when I need regen … I’ve got a rage tank who is surely going to rush right along (and she did) … let’s see what happens.

Ok, I think I can understand what Hart finds so great about this. You haven’t lived until you’ve had a tank down to 2% health and had a single Holy Light fill their bar back to full. She chain pulled the dragon room … I was practically squealing by the end …  I may have even yelled a Rotface-esque ‘wheeeeeeee’ at one point. On boss fights I beaconed myself, on trash I beaconed whichever dps happened to take damage, and I just healed the tank and let beacon and glyph of Holy Light take care of the rest. I remembered to use Divine Illumination … I tossed out a judgement when I could to proc Judgements of the Pure …  I forgot about my haste trinket but I did use the Pendant of the Violet Eye.

I still hate Ingvar. No LoS issues this time, but some idiot forgot to stop casting during Dreadful Roar … and to make matters worse, the tank was already low and I had just hit Divine Favor to make the Holy Light I was winding up a guaranteed crit … uh, oops? It’s just me and the unholy DK now. I bubble, beacon myself, and lay some heals down on him … getting close, Ingvar’s pretty low, toss out a judgement … phew. Tank cheers, I apologize for losing her, everyone gets rezzed, we all go home happy.

So, as bad as UK #1 was …. by UK #3 I have fully gone holy and there’s no looking back. I’ll burn through the questlog as ret, but when it’s time to dungeon and ultimately settle on a main spec …. ooh yeah, shower me with that spellpower plate.

Forging Shadow’s Edge

May 20, 2010

Now, I understand. I had thought that this post from Blame Squelchy was just an excellent piece of RP/humor. But it actually is true that the Lich King whispers the person who wields Shadow’s Edge.  At the time of that post and my initial comment, it was only wishful thinking that I might have one of my own someday.  After all, my mage is my main, and getting Rotface down in 25 man seemed like an impossibility. Ok, fine, truth be told, my mage STILL hasn’t downed him. But that’s a rant for another day.

A month or so back, Karius was running in a joint 25 man with Crits. When Apathy and Crits simultaneously decided to start doing guild-only runs, Kalyon was offered a spot in the Crits run. The run had a couple of other unholy DKs in it, so after the first week, I switched back to DW frost. This was shortly after the latest patch and all of its yummy frost buffs. I did some regemming and tweaking with advice from one of the fantastic players there (hi Fyuria!), and got some upgrades and achievements, and was soon neck and neck with the top unholy DK and holding my own against the uber pally.

I passed on rolling on the blood for the quest most of the time, figuring  there were others who needed it more, especially since I was DW anyway. I did roll once and said ‘pass it to the pally’ but Cael had already given it to me anyway. As it turned out, it was the last item the pally needed to finish the quest. I put in a ticket, the item was passed on, he got his axe. All this time though, it was in the back of my mind. Karius had been buying a saronite every now and again, and I had stocked up over 200 frosties on both characters.

The week after the ‘Fester’s blood to the pally’ story, there was no one else who wanted or needed Rotface’s blood. Ok, fine, now I really DO have one part of the equation. All during the week after that, I added up what I had and what I needed to get, and determined that yes, if I got Fester’s blood the next time we faced him, I would have enough. So I rolled ….

With both blood in my bag, I made my way to Frostmourne Cavern in Dragonblight to recover Arthas’ discarded hammer. Of course, he had to show up and try to prevent this. Yo, if you wanted it so bad, why did you leave it lying there?

And then, like usual, he’s all talk, leaving his lackey and a pile of ghouls to do the work for him. Ok, fine, so his lackey is no pushover, being an 81 elite with 156k health. Go go tank spec. But still …

The ghouls do not stop spawning. The only way to get rid of them, is to fight your way to the hammer. Don’t stop to fight though … just bulldoze your way to the hammer, drop your AoE, and go to town. As soon as you have enough cleared to click on the hammer, do it. The hammer will rise up, and the Light … the Light will shoot out from it in Holy vengeance, destroying the remaining ghouls as well as the vargul lackey before coming to rest where the vargul once stood.

Wait! Not so fast. Make sure you are healed up and have all your good stuff off coodown before you click. In fact, as soon as you click, pop army. That elite with 156k health is gonna crawl back out of the ground. If you’ve gotten this far, you’re obviously geared enough to down Fester and Rot in 25 man, so he’s totally soloable if you are smart and use your cooldowns.

Beat him … and your prize awaits you.

Just don’t spend too long drinking and taking screenshots before picking it up, or it will disappear and you will have to do the whole thing over, right from the beginning where Arthas first appears … not that I did that or anything. >.>

With all three reagents in hand, plus the 25 primordial saronite that I collected from my mailbox, I then begged a guildie for a few minutes of raid grouping and flew back to Icecrown Citadel. The first step is to feed the items to the forge.

Then you talk to Mograine and he exults in the forging of the weapon, but also warns you of its potency and the consequences should you fail.

The quest you receive after claiming the axe is to reap 1000 souls of the Lich King’s minions in ICC. I’d forgotten about Squelchy’s post when I went into ICC on Sunday evening. I tanked the lower spire, then we shuffled a couple of raid members around and I swapped to DPS  after Saurfang. The first val’kyr went down, the first soul fed my axe, and … the Lich King himself whispered me! Half the raid laughed at me when I expressed this in raid chat. hehe. I’m looking foward to the 900+ souls still to go.

Will I ever get far enough to wield Shadowmourne? Highly doubtful … although I thought the same thing about Shadow’s Edge, so who knows.
