Shocking: Dragon Soul Day One

November 30, 2011

Is it really that easy, or are we just … wait, hold that thought, let me back up a bit.

Hey, there was a patch yesterday! Slice had assigned us homework on anticipation of that event, wanting us to look at videos and/or strats for the first four bosses in Dragon Soul. So yesterday, in between phone calls at work, I hung out on Learn 2 Raid and studied. I’m pretty sure most of the team also did the same at some point. We don’t do PTR, but we don’t go in blind. We prepare. A number of us also spent some time e-mailing a group discussion back and forth, including predictions on how we would do. I figured the first two would go down fairly easy, but the ooze guy would give us problems. I didn’t expect to even see Hagara. I also bet 10g that a certain raid member would die to Black Blood on the first boss. Let’s see how I did, eh?

Morchok

Number of pulls: Uno. As in, One.

Number of deaths: Zero. Zilch. Nil.

You guys want the posed kill shots for each one of these, too? That’s gonna be lots of screenshots in one post! Actually … you know what? It doesn’t matter. You only get first kills once. The main point of this blog is to record my activities so I can look back on them in the future, so get ready, here they come.

Alright, moving on …

Warlord Zon’ozz

Number of pulls: um … 10 >.>

Number of deaths: Well, none in the kill. :P

Seriously, I thought this guy would be easy, but we had some troubles getting used to him. I kept losing Arv … looking at the logs it seems to have been a combination of the cone attack and the stacking damage buff. Eventually though, we put it all together.

This would be a good place to talk about the redesigned Holy Radiance. LOVE. IT. Arv was bitching about it having a cast time now but honey .. you’re a tank. It’s not *for* you. It’s for ME. My healing done in the second stack-up phase of the kill pull topped out at 38K HPS. From raid healing … a paladin … raid healing!!! I could gush all day about this spell but I have videos to study before tonight so I had better move on. Seriously though … I’m crazy about Holy Radiance now.

Yor’sajh

Number of pulls: 3

Number of deaths: None in the kill

Wow, I didn’t realize it was just three pulls. I mean … THIS was the fight that I thought we would stumble on. We lost Arv during times when we had the blue Mana Void out. Once we recognized the pattern and got cooldowns and HoTs and whatnot on him before our mana was drained, we had no problems whatsoever.

Raid members present last night were Adoe, Arvash, Cayle, Fahalala, Jendora, Liyhe, Lyssianna, Pix, Vanicus, and Zarm. I guess you knew that though, since, you know, all you have to do is look at the raid frames on the screenshots. >.<

Hagara the Stormbinder

Number of pulls: Sex. Er … six!

Number of deaths: Hm. It says one but … I think the same person maybe died twice.

There were a couple of crazy moments in this fight. There’s a lot going on and I really didn’t expect her to die so easily. Slice always shudders and mumbles stuff about how people can’t dance whenever someone mentions Heigan, so I figured we’d be doomed here. I can’t understand a thing on vent during the lightning phase because my sound gets distorted. More than once I was hit with Shattered Ice at the same time she was doing Focused Assault on Arv and had to make the right decision whether to put big heals on him or dispel myself. Of course, now that I look, I see that the only thing I was dispelling was a 4s movement speed debuff, so I suck … but now I know! It won’t distract me again. /facepalm

Alright … I’ve got transmog shots too but … you’re gonna have to wait to see how sexy Kalethos looks. Tomorrow hopefully there will be more new boss kills to post!

Old Raids, Good Times

November 29, 2011

How can you double your fun in Classic Raids? Bring two paladins of course.

Over the weekend, it was Kerick and Hartbane. I forget what I was doing at the time, but when Hart wants to do something, I’ll drop everything as long as I’m not already in a group. AQ40? Sure! I whispered Saint and got him to log over as well, figuring it would be even faster with three of us. We’re going along and Hart says something about how no reds have dropped. So of course, one drops shortly after that. And guess what?

Yeah it’s a fail screenshot but still …

Then last night, Trout had Tempest Keep on the calendar. The screenshots from that are even more fail because there aren’t any. Oops. Kerick and Paaradi took care of divine storming everything in sight in that one. I made Zari go along too. I joked about how killing all the blood elves was like having a couple dozen Fayles tanking the floor. Afterwards, Trout hopped on Elgar because he needs a belt from Gruuls, so we went there. The party at that point consisted of 2 paladins and 3 priests. I keep telling him we need to change the guild name from Crits and Giggles to Priests and Pallies.

Ok, so that’s over and I log on to Van to check my auctions, and there’s Arvash in guild chat … ‘anyone want to hit Kara or BT?’ … hellz yeah! Of course, it’s Arv, and I haven’t seen him for like a week since he was on vacation, so he coulda said let’s go PvP and I woulda said yes. No one else wanted to go, so we hit up Kara. I’m not sure but, there might not be anything in the entire game that’s more fun than a couple of paladins divine storming their way through Kara. We barely even stood still long enough to loot. Finally we stopped for a second at Barnes.

Of course, Arv couldn’t let Barnes have the spotlight all by himself, so he dropped his D.I.S.C.O.

Yes, I took multiple screenshots here. What?

We had a bit of fun in Chess. We literally used up every piece so at the end, the only two of ours that were still alive were Blackhand and the demon that I was in. I think it was like the third piece I jumped in. lol. Oh well, we won.

Afterwards we tried going to Hyjal. The raid, not the zone. We had no problems with the trash waves, but Arv hadn’t been there before, and I kinda forgot about the first boss’ Death and Decay, so since we stood him right on the piles of dead ghouls, we couldn’t see the ground and it quickly did us in. We released and ran back and got the ‘unable to zone in while an encounter is in progress’ message. So annoying. So I’m whispering Trout for advice because I know he loves Hyjal and might know what to do … and then I hear the sounds of battle nearby. I believe my exact thought was ‘What the hell could he have found down here to … oh’ so I turned around and raced down the corridor. A warlock. I jumped on them and was doing pretty good, almost had him down when I saw him get a heal. Look over my shoulder … frack. A disc priest. So I switched targets but naturally that left the lock free to do whatever, and they made short work of me. As I die, a DK on a drake comes riding up. Arv was already down when I saw the priest so .. yeah. Neither one of us claims to be good at or even like PvP so we were kind of sitting ducks. Especially in our off specs. They would have had a fight on their hands in our main specs though. Or at least would have had a hard time killing us.

Turkey Weekend Wrap-up

November 28, 2011

Four day weekend? Yes please! I made the most of it, too.

Thursday, after all the usual Thanksgiving activities were done and I was back home, I decided I was sick of the same 3 instances over and over, so at level 71, Kalethos headed out to Dragonblight to lay some smackdown on some quest mobs. That … turned into 3 and a half levels of re-living the storyline, culminating in the achievement Might of Dragonblight after 130 quests … and he didn’t do the ones that lead up to Really Big Worm, either. (And yes, I still cry when I watch the Wrathgate cinematic.) It was also a reminder of one thing that Wrath did very well … and Cata failed at, at least in the 80-85 zones – separate storylines for both factions. If  you have never played through Dragonblight on each side, you’re missing out. There is so much lore in the questlines there. If you do any of the high level Cata zones other than Twilight Highlands … you see it all the first time, regardless of your faction. Now, this is not true in the revamped 1-60 zones, so I can cut them some slack given the massive undertaking that redoing the original continents represented. But I hope that they will find some way to make the factional quests more divergent in MoP.

As for the actual Pilgrim’s Bounty … the only part that proved troublesome was finding rogues, particularly of the opposite faction. Used to be everyone hung out in Dalaran and would make rogues and stick them on the bank steps. Failing that, you could always get a friend to create one for you. Well, *I* still hang out in Dalaran, but most of the population doesn’t (part of the reason I love it there even more than before). And a good portion of my friends were ‘out of town’ over the weekend … where out of town mostly means playing SW:TOR. Fortunately, Blizz has provided an elegant solution, whether intended or not. Because now, you can just create your own! (Super thanks to one of my fellow Night Stalkers for the suggestion.) You know those ‘free to level 20′ trial accounts? Yeah. Just attach one to your account, and make what you need. I was hesitant because I knew my computer would balk at running two instances of WoW at the same time. But as long as I only logged into them both for as long as it took to use one turkey shooter (i.e. no running around and trying to do things) it was fine.

So I made a nelf, a gnome, and a dwarf for Vanicus.

And I made an orc, a nelf, and a dwarf for Kalethos.

It is VERY strange to be on another toon, and be looking at .. .well, your own toon. Like being outside your body. So weird to be standing there looking at Kale.

So … after the 130 quests in Dragonblight, I was understandably sick of questing again. lol. So I hit dungeons until I got to 76 and could start the Oracles questline. Well, ok, almost 76. I was at 96% and figured I’d just head over to Sholazar and either ding on exploration or find something to kill. So I flew over to where Pitch is, since killing him starts off the whole thing. I overshot the location though, and what did I see near the pillar?

Just seeing him in the wild gives me goosebumps. All those months I spent camping his spawn points in early Wrath on my then-main hunter, and then on his first visit to the Basin my third paladin just stumbles right on him.

He dropped a very nice cloak with int and haste. >.>

I asked first! I swear it!! There were no hunters on anywhere. I dinged off killing him. And the cloak is gorgeous and will be in Kale’s transmog set for eternity. So there. =P

Between that questline and a lot more dungeons, he hit 78 last night. His JC, enchanting, and cooking are all at 425 and ready for Cata content. Just gotta get those last two levels of xp …and yes, I know Northrend xp is getting nerfed. Is it tomorrow? I didn’t want to wait. What else was I gonna do with a 4 day weekend?

Ghostcrawler!

November 23, 2011

Does this post even need text?

LOL! I just realized that he’s hitting me with the nerfbat. That is epic. And painful! He beat me down to 50% before the tame finished. I was so excited to see him that I dropped my freezing trap in the wrong place.

I suppose I should get off my butt and start looking for some of the Molten Front pets next.
